The Lloyd Williams-owned Fawkner is attracting more than his share of early support for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, firming from $11 into $10 at Sportingbet since the announcement of the final field and barrier draw on Saturday night.

Japanese horse Admire Rakti remains a $5 favourite at Sportingbet, in front of Protectionist ($6.50), Lucia Valentina ($7.50) and Signoff ($7.50).
“We’ve taken more money for Fawkner than any other horse since the final field was announced,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
“Fawkner is our worst result in our all-in book and the money continues to come for him in final field betting.”
Sportingbet has taken one bet of $6,000 at $11 for Fawkner and several other four-figure bets for the Sportingbet Cox Plate runner-up since Saturday night.
Despite the money for the locally-trained Fawkner, the odds are still stacked in the favour of an internationally-trained horse winning the Cup. Sportingbet makes it $1.73 that an international horse will win the Cup versus $2.07 for a local horse.
Other notable bets since Saturday night include $1500 @ $31 on Willing Foe and $1,000 at $31 for Cavalryman.
