Ben Currie is considering a move to Brisbane to test himself against the best trainers in Queensland.

Currently based at Toowoomba in the state’s Darling Downs, the 24-year-old has produced 40 winners this season, nine of those in the metropolitan area.

Currie said a switch to Brisbane had been in the back of his mind for some time.

“When the Eagle Farm renovation is completed there might be some more boxes there,” Currie said.

“You have to test yourself sooner or later and a move to Brisbane would help with that.

“Obviously you want your better horses to be firing if you make the decision to move.”

Currie comes from a family steeped in racing.

The son of respected horseman Mark Currie, his grandfather Paul Nolan senior and his uncles Michael Nolan and Paul Nolan junior are all trainers.

Ben Currie has been among the most consistent conditioners in the state for the past four years and hopes to continue his winning momentum with two runners at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

They are headed by Supercoach who will back up from a second at Doomben last weekend to run in the Devcon Building Plate (2200m).

“It was a good run last week because the winner had the last shot at him. This is no tougher on Saturday and at this stage he will go around,” Currie said.

Gully Command was a fast-finishing fifth at Doomben and he will also back up against open company in the National Construction Management Pty Ltd Handicap (1400m).

“Gully Command has shown he is up to open company. He was a good third in open company first up behind Falino and before a spell he was second to the top horse Teronado,” Currie said.

“There isn’t a lot around for him in benchmark races at the moment and I think this is the right type of open race for him.”

Former New Zealand apprentice Alysha Collett, who is building a strong relationship with the Currie stable, will ride both horses.
