Earthquake heads Thousand Guineas 2014 market

Fillies claimed four of the five juvenile Group One races last season and that quartet is favoured to fight out the Thousand Guineas.

In markets released by the TAB on Monday for the Caulfield Group One on October 11, Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake is the $4 favourite ahead of Champagne Stakes winner Go Indy Go at $6.

Mossfun, who beat Earthquake in the Golden Slipper is at $8 alongside third placed Bring Me The Maid and ATC Sires’ Produce winner Peggy Jean.

The Godolphin-owned Earthquake is due to begin her campaign in the Silver Shadow Stakes on Saturday week while Go Indy Go will head to Caulfield a week later for the McNeil Stakes.

Go Indy Go is the proven performer over 1600 metres and her senior trainer Leon Macdonald believes she can stretch out to the 2500 metres of the VRC Oaks.

The Adelaide trainer says the filly’s best attribute is her relaxed nature and it should take her all the way.

“She only had a short break after she went to Sydney,” Macdonald said.

“She is already pretty fit and will go to the races without a trial.

“I would have liked to see her put on a bit more weight. She has grown taller but not much bulkier but I’m happy with what we’ve got.

“The best thing about her is she is just such a laid-back filly and is so clean winded and easy going.

“She’s a freak.”

Go Indy Go is on the fourth line of Cox Plate betting at $21 but Macdonald will not be drawn into discussions on the weight-for-age championship just yet.

“We will wait and see what she does before there is any talk of the Cox Plate,” he said.

“She runs on August 30 and then at Flemington two weeks later and then the Thousand Guineas.”

Peggy Jean’s trainer Gerald Ryan is looking at the Group Two Furious Stakes (1200m) on September 6 for that filly’s return.

The Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid was edged out by Nostradamus in a close finish to a 760m barrier trial at Hawkesbury on Monday.
