Demon ready to roll in Victoria Handicap 2014

Developing sprinter/miler Sistine Demon will be out to continue his career-defining season in the Group Three Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.

On Saturday, Sistine Demon will shoot for a sixth win from eight starts during his 2013/14 campaign.

The gelding broke through for his maiden black type win at Flemington on March 8 and trainer Andrew Noblet gave him a break with a possible Brisbane campaign in mind. He did so well he was back in the stable sooner than planned.

With Damien Oliver unavailable due to commitments in Sydney, Noblet agonised about the choice of jockey before booking senior rider Brad Rawiller over emerging apprentice Jamie Kah.

“It was a tough decision because both have ridden him to wins so he goes well for both,” Noblet said.

Noblet will gallop Sistine Demon on the Caulfield course proper on Tuesday morning ahead of Saturday’s $150,000 contest.

“That gallop will top him off perfectly for Saturday,” Noblet said.

“He’s ticking along beautifully.”

Sistine Demon is one of 24 nominations for the Victoria Handicap, which include the Bart and James Cummings-trained stayer Precedence.

Precedence is the highest-rated among the entries at 107 ahead of the Group Three Naturalism Stakes winner Mr O’Ceirin.

Wez Hunter has nominated the 2012 Victoria Handicap winner Smokin’ Joey while Saturday’s impressive winner Natuzzi is likely to back up at Caulfield.

Last year’s Sydney Cup winner Mourayan is among the 25 entries in the day’s other feature, the Group Three Easter Cup (2000m).

Mourayan finished fourth in the Group One Australian Cup on March 8 and is joined in the Easter Cup entries by stablemate Tanby.

The nominations for the 2014 edition of the event feature eight imported gallopers, including the David Hayes-trained Stipulate.

Hayes won last year’s Easter Cup with former English horse Jet Away.
