Five months ago Andrew Noblet set his sights on winning the Sir Rupert Clarke Charity Cup with Sistine Demon.

On Sunday at Caulfield, he hopes one of the revelations of last season can rise to the occasion when horse and trainer chase their first Group One win in the 1400-metre race.

Sistine Demon rose through the ranks during the 2013-14 racing season with no horse winning more races in Victoria.

His seven wins included six in town with stakes victories in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes at Flemington and a six-length success in the Group Three Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.

It was that win in April, over the same course and distance as the Rupert Clarke, that brought Sunday’s feature into focus for Noblet.

“His record is really good around Caulfield and after winning the Victoria Handicap quite convincingly we sort of pinned this as his spring race. He’s going into the race in good order,” Noblet said.

The galloper failed in his first Group One test in The Goodwood in Adelaide in May, but Noblet was encouraged by his first-up fifth at Flemington in the Bobbie Lewis Quality won by Chautauqua.

“I thought it was as good as he has gone first-up,” the trainer said.

“He has come through the run in good order and had a good gallop at Sandown on Tuesday morning.”

Noblet would have liked Sistine Demon to have drawn closer than gate 11 in the field of 14 but the five-year-old will roll forward and sit somewhere near the speed.

Sistine Demon is at $10 in an open market for the $400,000 race with Sweet Idea joining Dissident as a $6 favourite.

Noblet has won Group Two races with Lilando and Sistine Angel and has trained a Group One placegetter but he says it will be a significant milestone if Sistine Demon wins on Sunday.

“We’re only a small stable and it’s very hard to win these races,” he said.

“It’s a good field and it’s going to be hard but we’ve got the right horse for this track.”

Sydney-based Brenton Avdulla has been called on to ride Sistine Demon on the limit weight of 52kg.
