News:

Apprentice Jordan Childs has been riding the crest of a wave in recent weeks including a city success at Caulfield.

After Saturday’s win on Golden Spin, Childs racked up a double at Yarra Glen on Monday, although he had to share one of those wins.

Childs started his winning run with a treble at Horsham last Sunday week and followed up with a double at Kyneton on Tuesday.

On Monday he rode Gibbon to win at Yarra Glen then steered Dutch Courage to a dead heat in the final race.

Childs said a month in Sydney with Gai Waterhouse during the spring carnival helped shaped his recent run of form.

“Since I’ve been back from Gai’s in Sydney my weight has been good and I’ve been fit,” Childs said.

“A number of things have been working out well and it’s just perfect at the moment.”

Childs said the spring was always going to be a quiet time for him as far as city rides went so he took the opportunity to expand his horizons.

“I had four or five seconds for Gai and got a winner for Peter Moody, so it was quite good,” he said.

With confidence and having stablised his weight, Childs is starting to pick up more outside rides.

Apprenticed to Patrick Payne, he rides work for his master three days a week and also head to Caulfield and Flemington while also lending a hand to Darren Weir when required for jump-outs.

“Trainers are starting to utilise my claim which is good,” he said.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman stable used his claim to advantage when Golden Spin completed a winning hat-trick.
