A bronze statue of legendary jockey Roy Higgins will be unveiled at Flemington racecourse where he won two Melbourne Cups.

Higgins, nicknamed `The Professor’, died in March last year aged 75.

His career in the saddle included a record-equalling 11 Melbourne jockeys’ premierships, 108 Group One wins and more than 2300 overall winners.

Higgins won the Melbourne Cup on Light Fingers in 1965 and Red Handed in 1967 for the late Bart Cummings.

The statue, by artist Judith Leman, will be unveiled on Sunday.

“Only Phar Lap, Makybe Diva and Bart Cummings are honoured with statues at Flemington. Rightly, Roy Higgins will join that group as a true legend of racing to be remembered as long as Flemington racecourse still stands,” Victoria Racing Club chairman Michael Burn said.

“Roy Higgins and Bart Cummings’ partnership is remembered as one of racing’s greatest. It’s particularly fitting that statues of both men will live on at Flemington.”
