Caulfield Cup 2014: Lucia Valentina on weight-for-age path

Bookmakers have been quick to react to Lucia Valentina’s Tramway Stakes win but trainer Kris Lees says it is premature to bet on her in the Caulfield Cup.

The mare was promoted to favouritism by more than one firm and is the second favourite with the TAB which has her at the top of betting for the Epsom Handicap, also an unlikely target.

Lucia Valentina came from back in the field with a scintillating burst of speed to overhaul Tiger Tees in Saturday’s Tramway (1400m) at Randwick at the first start of her four-year-old season.

“She will go to the George Main next and then the Turnbull Stakes in Melbourne,” Lees said.

“I’m not sure if she is up to the 2400 metres of the Caulfield Cup at this level.

“She is so brilliant over the shorter courses and the Cox Plate might be the race for her.”

The Group One George Main Stakes (1600m) is at Randwick on September 20 while the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) is on October 4, the same day as the Epsom.

Lucia Valentina has only raced over 2400 metres once when third to Rising Romance in the Australian Oaks after her victory in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Before leaving the New Zealand stable of Bruce Marsh to join Lees earlier this year, Lucia Valentina finished second in a 2000m Group Two race won by Rising Romance, an eye-catching fourth in the Tramway.

The Donna Logan-trained mare is on a path to the Caulfield Cup and will also run in the George Main as will Toydini who edged her out of third on Saturday.

Formerly trained by Guy Walter, Toydini entered the Hawkes stable after the sudden death of Walter in May.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes and jockey James McDonald said they were more than happy with Toydini’s first-up effort given the heavy track.

“He struggled in the ground but still had the audacity to keep going,” McDonald said.

Toydini is now an $11 chance for the Epsom behind Lucia Valentina and Royal Descent at $8.
