The Australia Day Cup isn’t the Melbourne Cup and Destiny’s Kiss is no Might And Power but his win at Randwick has brought joy to Nick Moraitis.
The owner of 1997 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups winner Might And Power, Moraitis has scaled his racing interests back over the past few years.
But he still got a big kick out of Destiny’s Kiss winning the Listed 2400m race on Tuesday.
“It’s great to see,” Moraitis said.
The seven-year-old’s trainer Joe Pride earmarked the race as the perfect option after Destiny’s Kiss returned to the winners’ list in the Gosford Cup earlier this month.
Things fell into to place with a small field and a rain-softened track for the $2.40 favourite.
Jason Collett had Destiny’s Kiss back in the field of six and let him loose in the straight where he fought off a brief challenge from Dream Folk ($7) to win by 1-1/4 lengths.
“He is the smallest horse I have ever trained but he has a big motor,” Pride said.
“He is only 420 kilograms which would be 130 less than (Group One winner) Terravista.
“He is back going so well. He loves wet tracks and small fields and he has class which shone through today.
“And he’s had to carry the big weight today.”
Destiny’s Kiss carried 59kg compared to Dream Folk’s 54kg. When they met in the Gosford Cup there was a 1.5kg difference with Dream Folk third in that race.
The options are limited for Destiny’s Kiss going into the autumn when the Group One horses make their way back.
“There’s not a lot around for him,” Pride said.
“The Parramatta Cup in a couple of weeks is there but on the other hand I don’t want to burn him out.”
The Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) is at Rosehill on February 20 and will feature high-profile New Zealander Hasselhoof.
