Breeding barn beckons for Black Magic

Win, lose or draw at Doomben on Saturday, stakes-winning mare Black Magic has a date with freshman sire Golden Archer.

Trainer Bruce Brown confirmed Black Magic would be having her final start in the Business Success Group Open Handicap (1350m).

Black Magic has won five races including the Listed Juanmo Stakes but Brown has no doubt she should have twice that number of wins beside her name.

“Gee, she has been an unlucky mare. Just have a look at the stewards report from her last start, she just about filled the page herself,” Brown said.

“She was placed in good company at Rosehill when she should have won and I could go on and on about the misfortune she has had.”

A Golden Slipper-winning trainer, Brown said a victory by Black Magic on Saturday would give him one of the biggest thrills of his career.

“I had been thinking about running her in the 1600-metre race on Saturday but it got scrapped,” he said.

“We’ll go forward on Saturday and hope she gets some cover. I just hope she goes out showing what she can really do.”

Black Magic was originally going to be served by top sire Sebring but will instead be mated with Golden Archer who stands at Raheen Stud on the Darling Downs.

“Golden Archer has all the attributes needed to be a top QTIS (bonus) type of sire. The money for QTIS races is going up soon and we were looking for that type of stallion,” Brown said.

Trained by Peter Moody, Golden Archer won five races as a two-year-old and was bought to replace Group One-winning sire Captain Sonador who was euthanased earlier this year.
