TAB agencies in Brisbane’s inner north-west will have to check cash their reserves before unlikely cult horse Ashgrovian tackles the Listed Breakfast Creek Hotel Stakes on Saturday.

Two-year-old Ashgrovian is named after Marist Ashgrove College, a famous rugby union nursery in the heart of the inner north-west Brisbane suburb of Ashgrove.

At least two of the TAB agencies in the Ashgrove area had to send for more cash when Ashgrovian won at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

Ashgrovian was bred on the Darling Downs by Bob Frappell at Clear Mountain Stud and is raced by his long-time friend Bill Andrews, a former student of Marist Ashgrove.

“The horse races in the school colours of blue and gold and I named him for a bit of fun,” Andrews said.

“I understand more than a few of the old boys and locals have been backing him.”

Andrews is a former Queensland rugby union player, retired Brisbane solicitor and a former board member of Racing Queensland.

These days Andrews is heavily involved as an owner and breeder of racehorses.

Ashgrovian is trained by Geoff Burns whose best horses included the 1981 Melbourne Cup runner up El Laurena and the smart sprinters Crawford and King Capri.
