News:

Injured apprentice Jye McNeil will have a better idea when he can return to riding when he re-visits his surgeon this week.

McNeil has been out for eight weeks after having a plate and screws inserted to repair a broken tibia and fibula sustained in a mishap at Bendigo in March.

“The fibula was just above the ankle joint and the tibia was in the ankle joint,” McNeil said.

“There was also a bit of ligament damage as well.”

McNeil’s leg got caught in his reins after he was dislodged from a horse heading onto the track.

He underwent the operation a few days later and will visit the same surgeon on Wednesday for a progress report.

McNeil is currently wearing a moon boot.

“It’s just 50 per cent weight bearing until I see the surgeon on Wednesday,” McNeil said.

“He’s going to take an X-ray and see how everything is healing.

“And without knowing, I’m hoping to be able to start putting a bit more pressure on it.”

McNeil said Racing Victoria’s doctor Gary Zimmerman indicated when he suffered the injury, recovery would take about four months.

“For now I’m just making sure I do everything the surgeon and the physio says to make sure it’s 100 per cent when it’s ready to go,” McNeil said.

McNeil’s apprenticeship is due to finish at the end of May but he will apply for an extension to account for his injury lay-off.

He needs seven more city wins to outride his claim.

“That will be the goal I set for when I return to riding,” he said.
