Bold Circle may be saved for 2014 San Domenico Stakes Field

Bold Circle has pleased David Payne since his impressive public work-out at Rosehill but the trainer will delay a decision on his three-year-old debut until he has another gallop.

The colt is among 11 entries for the Listed Rosebud but Payne will wait until he works on Tuesday to decide whether he kicks off in Saturday’s race or is saved for the San Domenico a week later.

Bold Circle held his own against dual Group One winning stablemate Criterion in a race day gallop on Saturday ahead of a campaign aimed at the $1 million Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas.

“We’ll just wait and see how he works in the morning,” Payne said.

“We might wait another week for the San Domenico. There is no rush to decide.

“I believe he is a horse who can get a mile (1600m). The Golden Rose is his aim in Sydney and then we will see after that.”

The $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) is at Rosehill on September 13.

The San Domenico (1100m) on Saturday week has already lost star attraction Rubick who is one of several Sydney horses to contract a short-term virus.

His trainer Gerald Ryan said Rubick spiked a temperature for a couple of days and his program would be altered but the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in November remained a target.

Payne said his stable had not been immune but the virus was not serious.

“Paederos had it about six weeks ago and he then came out and won,” he said.

Jeff Lloyd rode Bold Circle in his gallop and will take the mount on Saturday if the colt runs.

If he does it will be just his third start. He ran third in the Breeders’ Plate in October and then won an 1100m race but was given a long spell when he developed some knee issues.

Breeders’ Plate winner Law is among the entries for the Rosebud as he begins his three-year-old season in a new stable after being transferred from Gai Waterhouse to Chris Waller.
