News:

Robert Smerdon will delay a decision until later in the week as to whether class mare Politeness takes her place at Caulfield.

The daughter of Street Sense has been nominated to make her return from a break in the Group Two Rubiton Stakes on Saturday.

Politeness scored first-up over 1200m in mares company at Caulfield last September and ended a four run campaign finishing second to Turn Me Loose in the Group One Emirates Stakes at Flemington in November.

Saturday’s contest is a set-weights and penalties race and Politeness is the highest-rated runner nominated.

With only 11 nominations at closing time, entries have been extended until 10am on Tuesday.

The five-year-old was taken to the Cranbourne trials on Monday where she finished fourth behind Lizard Island and Scissor Kick in a 990m hit-out.

She was beaten almost nine lengths but was never out of second gear under Dwayne Dunn.

“She was here for an easy time,” Smerdon said.

“She needed to have an easy trial today if we’re to back her up on Saturday in the Rubiton.

“We’ll make a decision on that a bit later in the week but she is going along nicely.”

Stablemate Noble Protector finished just behind Politeness in the trial but Smerdon said she requires more trials before making her return.

Noble Protector won the Matron Stakes at Flemington first-up last March and Smerdon has the same race in mind for the imported mare.

She will then head to the Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley in late March before a return trip to Sydney for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Lumosty finished at the tail of the field in her trial over 800m behind Mourinho.

Smerdon said she will have another trial before she makes a return.

“We’re thinking about going to Sydney for The Galaxy with her and then across to Adelaide,” Smerdon said.

“She might have a run here first, but we’ll make that decision a bit later.”
