News:

One day she’s working as the clerk of the course, the next Sally Wynne is riding a winner at Sandown.

After working at Pakenham on Tuesday leading in the winners on the nine-event card, Wynne landed her first city winner since November 2013 when she guided $11 chance Secret Sequin to victory in the Catanach’s Jewellers Plate on Wednesday.

Now Wynne is in the process of applying for her trainer’s licence to complement her riding licence.

Other jockeys applying for a trainers’ licence as they continue with their riding careers include Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne and champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman.

But Wynne won’t be allowed to train in a partnership with her mother Dianne when she is finally granted her licence.

“We can apply for it, which I’m trying to, but it’s up to the (Racing Victoria) board as to when they sit,” Wynne said.

“It’s very hard to go out on your own training, which is why we were pushing for jockeys to slowly make the transition rather than just going out on your own.

“Mum’s got horses that she’s bred to get me going and then it’s up to me to sell myself.”

For good measure Wynne also breaks in a few horses to supplement her income as a clerk of the course, a jockey and a future trainer.

“I’ve got to pay the bills and eat somehow,” she said.
