News:

A nervous morning turned into a day Carole Heffernan will never forget after she trained her first Saturday city winner.

And the victory of Rich Jack in the National Jockeys Trust Final was made even more special for Heffernan because it came at Caulfield.

Her late father Kevin Heffernan was a Melbourne Racing Club committeeman.

“It’s my first Saturday city winner. It’s at Caulfield. It’s dad’s old track. I just couldn’t be happier,” Heffernan said.

Heffernan said the morning was a nerve-wracking experience for her, knowing she had a leading chance.

“I was cleaning out the stables thinking `I can’t believe this, I’ve got the favourite on a Saturday’,” Heffernan said.

“You dream of it and don’t think it’s going to happen. But it’s happened.”

Starting favourite, Rich Jack ($3.40)was well ridden in front by veteran Darren Gauci and scored by 1-1/4 lengths.

Heffernan said Rich Jack could run in the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes in two weeks.

And there’s another race in November the trainer would love to have a runner – the Kevin Heffernan Stakes.

“I think this is the horse that could do it,” she said.

Heffernan has three horses in work and said she never had more than six in training because she has to travel them from Yarra Glen to Cranbourne for trackwork.

The race was the culmination of the National Jockeys Trust Race Series comprising 11 races over the past month in Victoria.

Harry Coffey took out the series.
