Aurie’s Star Handicap 2014: Possible Melbourne debut for Snowdens

The Peter and Paul Snowden partnership could have its first Melbourne runner in Saturday’s Group Three Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington.

The Snowdens won many features in Melbourne when part of the Darley organisation before the pair set up their own training business in the autumn.

They prepared nine winners from 30 Sydney runners in the latter part of the season as they built up their team at Randwick.

The Snowdens have nominated I’ve Got The Looks for the Aurie’s Star Handicap as well as a Benchmark 85 race at Randwick on Saturday and Paul Snowden said the likely make-up of both fields would decide where they run the mare.

“Everyone’s trying to get a bit of black type in the family for the client and that’s basically what it comes down to,” Snowden said.

“We’re just trying to place her right and get the best result.”

I’ve Got The Looks was formerly with Guy Walter and was transferred to his wife Wendy after the trainer’s sudden death in May.

The mare resumed with an emotional win at Rosehill on July 5, Wendy Walter’s final day as the interim trainer of the stable’s horses.

I’ve Got The Looks finished third at her debut for the Snowdens on the maligned Kensington track on July 26.

“It probably wasn’t the track as much as carrying the 60 (kg),” Paul Snowden said.

“The weight swing around definitely makes the Flemington race attractive. It just matters who accepts.”

Nominations for the Aurie’s Star Handicap will remain open until Tuesday morning after trainers entered 13 sprinters, headed by Sydney speedster Tiger Tees.

Joe Pride is hoping for rain in either Sydney or Melbourne and will monitor track conditions before deciding whether Tiger Tees runs in the Missile Stakes at Randwick or the Aurie’s Star.

David Bourne has entered last-start winner Zamorar for the $150,000 race after scratching him from Moonee Valley on Saturday while the 2012 Aurie’s Star Handicap winner Shanghai Warrior is also among the entries.
