Tiger Woods finally turned up at Valhalla on Wednesday and will take his place in the PGA Championship after getting through a practice round.

The former world No.1 withdrew midway through the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio last Sunday due to back spasms putting his place in the final major of the year up in the air.

But the 14-time major winner got through nine full holes late Wednesday afternoon before walking the back nine with just his wedges and putter.

Earlier this year in March Woods had surgery to treat a pinched nerve in his back, missing three months of action.

In Ohio, he hurt himself after a tricky shot above a bunker when he fell backwards into the sand.

“Basically, when I landed in the bunker, my sacrum went out,” Woods said.

“So I pinched the nerve and hence the spasm. My physio put it back in and we’ve just been treating it. I’m pain-free (now).

“It’s not the site of the surgery. This is something totally different.

“As I said when I landed, it jarred it and jarred it loose, made it come out.

“Once the bone is put back in, it’s all good. The inflammation has been down, I’ve had range of motion and as you saw out there, I got my speed, my power, and I just need to obviously keep moving.”

Woods won the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, the last time it was played at the venue.

He has been stuck on 14 majors since winning the 2008 US Open with a busted leg.

“It feels great to be back here. The fans are enthusiastic. They’re loud. They’re into it,” Woods said.

“It’s a totally different golf course than what I played in 2000. These greens are all different. I have my book from 2000; it’s useless.

“There are some new things that we have to learn out there. Joey (caddie) has been here on the ground and he’s got a pretty good handle on it.

“We’ll run through some more of it as we go. I played all right (in practice). Nothing great. It’s only Wednesday.”
