Webb’s still the boss to golf’s young guns

She’s one of the nation’s rising stars but even Su Oh finds it hard to think of a time when Karrie Webb won’t be Australia’s top female golfer.

Webb, 40, has been the dominant figure in Australia’s women’s golf for two decades.

Since turning pro in 1994, Webb has won seven Major championships, a further 34 LPGA Tour events and 13 Australian Ladies Professional Golf titles, including eight Australian Ladies Masters crowns.

Oh was part of a young Australian team which won the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship in Japan last year.

Both the 18-year-old Victorian and teammate Minjee Lee have since turned pro, as the next generation of the country’s female golf stars start to emerge.

But Oh, who shot a first-round four-under-par 69 in the opening round of the Ladies Masters at Royal Pines on Thursday, still can’t imagine anyone toppling Webb from top spot.

“I would like to be the best as I can, but I mean Karrie has just been there for so long and she’s won the most majors out of the active players,” Oh said.

“I don’t know, maybe 10 years later, maybe she won’t be playing 10 years later. She’s still playing awesome golf.

“I mean, she won the Aussie Open last year.”

While Oh is making a positive start to her life as a pro, she has been forced to watch as Lee successfully secured a playing card for this year’s LPGA Tour in the United States.

Oh says the rivalry between her and the 18-year-old West Australian is a friendly one but it also has a competitive edge.

“Minjee and I have played a lot of golf together,” she said.

“We’ve been very good for each other, for our game.

“She’s playing really well at the moment. Hopefully I’ll be as good too – I’ll play some good golf.”
