Trio shoot 61 to share Queensland PGA lead

Three players have carded sizzling rounds of 61 to share the lead after the first round of the Queensland PGA Championship in Toowoomba.

In perfect scoring conditions at the City Golf Club, the birdies came thick and fast for Victorian David Bransdon, New Zealander Ryan Fox and NSW’s Anthony Summers, who shot nine-under-par rounds to sit at the top of the leaderboard.

Their scores equalled the course record set by Brad McIntosh in 2009.

Fox said he thought at one stage on the way home he could go under 60.

“I had the thought of 59 on my head through 14 holes but hit the wrong club on 15,” said the 27-year-old Fox.

“I hit it over the green and made bogey which killed the momentum, but no complaints it was a nice round of golf.”

Three shots off the lead at six-under and tied for fourth are defending champion Brad Kennedy (Qld), Jamie Arnold (NSW) and Michael Choi (Vic).

A further shot back is Swede Thomas Petersson and Victorian Kevin Conlong, while a group of 11 players are at four-under.
