TOUR Championship at East Lakes Golf Club 2014 – Golf Tips, Odds and Preview

The PGA Tour regular season culminates this week with the TOUR Championship at East Lakes Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. East Lakes Golf Club is a Par 70 course measuring 7154 yards. The greens are Bermudagrass. The Purse this week is US$8 million with the winner taking home US$1,440,000.
With only 30 players in the field this week everyone will be out to stake their claim on the winner’s cheque. This week also sees the crowning of the FedExCup winner who will take home a US$10 million bonus.

Realistically any of the 29 players in the field can still claim the FedExCup bonus however they will need to rely on other players higher in the standings having a bad weekend. To make it simple if one of the Top five players secures victory this week they will take the FedExCup honours and the US$10 million bonus.

Those five players are Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan.

To win this week a player will need to be able to handle the pressure cooker environment as the 10 million bonus is sure to be on their mind late in the round on Sunday. Nerves of steel, experience and motivation will take you a long way this week. Putting stats should also be looked at as three of the last four winners have lead the field in putting. Hitting greens is also a requirement at East Lakes. Good ball strikers also fair well here.

The Top five in betting this week are- $4.50 Rory McIlroy, $10.00 Adam Scott, $12.00 Jim Furyk, $13.00 Rickie Fowler and $13.00 Sergio Garcia.

The two players to follow this week are:

Rory McIlroy @ $4.50

When the big tournaments come around you get to see the cream rise to the top. This weekend is the biggest prize in golf and that should see the World Number One player prove his ranking and take out the 2014 FedEx Cup.
Rory has had a magnificent season this year. He won two of the Majors in the Open Championship and PGA Championship. He also took out the BMW PGA Championship and WGC Bridgestone. That is four wins from 20 starts which also includes 13 Top 10 finishes.

His last two starts have him in great nick with a T5th Deutsche Bank and T8th BMW Championship. This week he will be in prime condition to take it out.

Stats wise his game is in great shape as well. 2nd in driving distance, 6th in greens in regulation, 1st in strokes gained total, 1st in strokes gained tee to green, 45th in strokes gained putting, 1st in birdie average, 1st in scoring average, 1st in Par 4 birdie or better and 7th in ball striking.

This is the first time I have tipped Rory this season and I am very keen on him going all the way. Add him into your weekend doubles too. McIlroy is a prodigious talent and see him at $4.50 in a 29 man field is excellent value.
John Senden @ $67.00

For those looking for some good each way and Top 10 value, look no further than Australia’s own John Senden. When it comes to ball striking, greens in regulation and putting you can not go past him.

This season on the tour he is ranked 18th in greens in regulation, 11th in strokes gained putting and 21st in ball striking.  Add to that a ranking of 14th in sand saves and 38th n scrambling and you have yourself a golfer who has the game for East Lakes.

In March this year John took out the Valspar Championship in Florida and has also had 8 Top 25 finishes from his 22 starts this year. His FedEx playoff results have also been very encouraging this season with T22nd The Barclays, T5th Deutsche Bank and T23rd BMW Championship. With his game in tune and the stats to match the course we can expect to see Senden up there challenging the favourites over the weekend.

Good luck and good punting.
