Teen Ryan Ruffels gets better of Scott

Teenage golf star Ryan Ruffels can now add out-driving world No.2 Adam Scott to his growing list of credentials.

The 16-year-old amateur played the first round of the Australian Masters at the Metropolitan course in Melbourne alongside two of his heroes, Scott and 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy.

He held his own in carding a three-over 75, two shots behind Scott, while Ogilvy was three under.

Ruffels, the son of former professional tennis players Ryan and Annamaria, described his first Masters experience as “fun”.

Especially out-driving Scott on the sixth.

“I actually out-drove Scotty by 30 which I was pretty happy with,” he said.

“Then he eagled the hole so he’s like, ‘Just look at the scoreboard mate’.

“That shut me up.”

Ruffels is living the dream, set to play a warm-up round with Rory McIlroy next week ahead of the world number one’s Australian Open defence.

But he recognises that with the attention comes more expectation, with a large gallery following the trio.

He enjoyed a huge roar of approval after rolling in a bomb on the 17th.

“I felt the love, that was crazy,” said the Melbourne high-school student, who was thrilled to get the week off while his friends were in class.

“I felt like I belonged but I was freaking nervous.”

And he seen first-hand how tough it can be for all out there, even golf royalty like Scott.

“Adam definitely wasn’t on his game today … but it’s cool to see someone like him hit bad shots too.”
