Sweden’s Henrik Stenson has finally gained maximum reward for a great season, winning the second US PGA Tour playoffs event by two strokes.

Stenson moves past Tiger Woods to the top of the tour’s season-long points standings as he shot a four-under-par 67 on rain-soaked TPC Boston and won the Deutsche Bank Championship at 21-under-par from American Steve Stricker (67).

His third US PGA Tour title – the first since 2009 – followed a second place at the British Open and third at the US PGA Championship, a third at the Scottish Open and a tie for second at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational – all over the last seven weeks.

“I’m pleased to have won. It was a big goal of mine to win a golf tournament after all those nice finishes so to do it I am very pleased,” Stenson said.

“I have been playing nicely for a long time and this week was no exception. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and the putter was hanging in there.”

Canadian Graham DeLaet (68) was third at 18-under while 20-year-old rookie sensation Jordan Spieth fired a 62 to tie for fourth with fellow Americans Matt Kuchar (66) and Kevin Stadler (68) at 17-under.

Jason Day was the best of the Australians in a tie for 13th after a 69 left him eight strokes behind Stenson.

Marc Leishman (70) played his way into this week’s third playoff tournament in Chicago by tying 16th at 13-under.

Starting the week at 76th on the points list, Leishman jumped to 58th to ensure at least one more tournament.

Adam Scott couldn’t back up his winning heroics from last week, finishing with a 72 to finish at six-under in a tie for 53rd.

Scott dropped from second in the playoff standings to third while Day bumped up from 16th to 12th heading to the BMW Championship.

Matt Jones missed the cut in Boston but will still head to the third playoff in 51st position.

Stuart Appleby (-3, T66) and Greg Chalmers (cut) were unable to get the results needed to survive and have bowed out of the playoff race, ending their seasons.
