Senden targets US Open golf win

John Senden is finally convinced he can win a major and he’s set his sights on the US Open.

After claiming his second US PGA Tour win in March and then backing it up with a top 10 finish at the Masters, where he played in the final group on Saturday, Senden’s belief has reached new heights.

Now he wants to capitalise on that in the majors and June’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2 is an obvious goal as the one that may suit his game best after he threatened the lead and finished inside the top 15 in it the past two years.

First, however, he has to get into the field.

While he’s already qualified for the British Open and US PGA Championship later in the year, Senden still has to play his way into the US Open – with the most likely method to be ranked inside the world top 60 on the May 26 cut off.

Two years ago, he reached a career-high No.28 world ranking before an injury-affected 2013 dropped the 43-year-old Queenslander as low as 125th earlier this year.

Now, back at No.55 and trending upwards, Senden lines up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this week at TPC Louisiana looking to improve his position.

“I’m looking at that top 50 in the world as a goal to get into all of the big events again,” Senden told AAP.

“Now that I have had some good results in the majors, I’ve been feeling better about myself when I turn up there and that’s allowed myself to believe I can achieve the dream you have since you’re a kid – winning a major.

“Obviously it would be great to be at Pinehurst as I think it would really suit me with the fast surfaces but I have to do the job first and get in there.

“Things are getting back to where I want them and expect them to be.

“I am ready to use the good feelings I have from playing well and also a strong attitude to compete week in and week out, not just streaky here and streaky there.”

Stuart Appleby, Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Chalmers, Scott Gardiner, Robert Allenby, Bronson La’Cassie and young rookie pro and sponsors invite Brady Watt join Senden in the field this week.
