Scott trying to repeat PGA history

Adam Scott is trying to recreate history as he makes a run up the leaderboard early in the final round of the US PGA tour’s opening playoff event at Ridgewood Country Club.

Scott, the defending Barclay’s champion who came from six shots back to win last year, started Sunday’s round chasing leaders Jason Day and Jim Furyk who were five strokes ahead.

An opening hole birdie followed by an eagle two holes later quickly moved the world No.2 into the top four just two off the pace.

But just as he looked set to shine a bogey on the fifth and another on the eighth has him five under for the week through eight holes, needing a surge over the back nine to contend.

Day will head out in the final group, looking for his third US tour win and second of the season after his World Golf Championship Match Play win in February.

“It will be tough but also I am excited and I am really looking forward to the challenge,” Day said prior to his warm up.

Stuart Appleby, who started three off the pace, has parred his opening hole to remain at six under and tied 12th.

Steven Bowditch who briefly held the lead on the opening day is two-under over his first 10 holes to also move to five under, capable of throwing the cat amongst the pigeons with a back nine blitz.

John Senden finished his tournament in fine fashion with a five-under 66 to be five under for the week, ensuring minimal damage, if any, will be done to his season long FedEx Cup standing.

Looking to maintain a position inside the top 30 over the next three weeks to qualify for the Tour Championship Senden is currently projected to be 26th.

“It was nice to finish with a good round today and get some momentum heading towards Boston next week,” Senden said.

“There is a score out there so hopefully Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby or Jason Day can put a number up and win the tournament.”
