The world No.1 crown seems out of reach for Adam Scott this week, after he failed to make a move while while Tiger Woods surged in the third round of the World Golf Championships event in Miami on Wednesday.

Needing to win to have any hope of overtaking Woods for top spot, Scott instead spent the early part of moving day at Trump National Doral sliding back down the leaderboard.

World No.1 Woods has rushed the other way, posting an impressive six-under 66 to rocket up to one-under par for the week, currently good enough to be fifth and just two off the lead.

It was the low round of the week to this point – a good sign for Woods, who guarantees a hold on No.1 if he finishes inside the top five.

Scott basically threw away his chances at contending on the front nine on Saturday where he fought back late to post an even-par 72.

With conditions near perfect, after brutal winds wreaked havoc in round two, Scott couldn’t take advantage of a couple of early birdie chances and then jumped on a bogey train.

A tee ball into the water on the fourth hole started a run of three bogeys in a row for the Queenslander, contributing to a 39 on the front side.

He was able to rebound with an eagle on the 10th hole followed by birdies on 12 and 15 before a bogey at 17 to get to four-over and a tie for 20th.

But the world No.2 now sits a distant seven shots off the lead held by American Patrick Reed (through 10 holes) at three-under.

Defending champion Woods carded eight birdies in his hot round with just two bogeys moving the 14-time major champion back into the mix.

Asian Tour regular Scott Hend shot a 73 to be five-over and tied 31st.

Brett Rumford sits dead last after a five-over 77 left him 23-over for the week.
