Scott shuns early split with broomstick

He’s trialling caddies but Adam Scott is adamant he won’t experiment with putters before his trusty broomstick is effectively outlawed after 2015.

The 2013 Masters champion is preparing for his last season – and last four chances to cash in at the majors – with the long wand that has so dramatically transformed his career.

Having posted just four top-10 finishes at the majors with a traditional blade, Scott has recorded nine in his past 16 starts since adopting the broomstick in 2012.

Apart from his historic Masters triumph, Scott also shared second at Augusta with countryman Jason Day in his first major with the long putter the year before and was runner-up at the British Open three months later.

But with a worldwide ban on players using putting stroke which is anchored against the body coming into effect in 2016, Scott could have been tempted to revert to a more conventional putter at times next year to get ready.

The world No.3 dismissed that notion on the eve of the Australian Open starting on Thursday.

“I’ll be putting the same way all next year,” Scott said at The Australian Golf Club.

Just who lugs his putter and the rest of Scott’s clubs around the world’s fairways in 2015 has been the question since he parted with super-caddie Steve Williams in September.

The Queenslander has “borrowed” Perth International winner Thorbjorn Olesen’s caddie Mike Kerr for the Australian Open after using Englishman David Clark – a former bagman for Ernie Els and Lee Westwood – at last week’s Australian Masters in Melbourne.

Scott has also used Swiss neighbour Eddie Gardino since splitting with Williams and says the key to deciding on a long-term replacement is finding the right dynamic.

“There probably isn’t another Steve Williams out there,” Scott said.

“Steve was such a strong character … I’m not looking to replace him. I think that would be the wrong way to go about it.

“The big thing for me in finding the caddie is going to be the personality and how that gels certainly with me but also the rest of the people around me as well and how we work as a team.”

Apart from winning the Masters with the New Zealander on his bag, Williams helped Scott ascend to the top of the world rankings this year.

“We had such a good and successful time together, but those things change and you move on to different stages of your career and your life,” Scott said.

“I think it’s good timing for me that I’ve got a bit of time up my sleeve to not have to jump up there and make a decision and put someone on straight away and think it might be the wrong decision and I have to chop and change.”
