Scott searching for missing link

Adam Scott ascended to world No.1, won an event, had 10 top 10 finishes and extended his cut streak to 44 events but wants more from his game.

Scott ended his US PGA Tour season in a tie for ninth at the Tour Championship, once again a decent result but not close to the top, ensuring he’ll spend his off-season looking for improvement.

Despite all the good from 2014, the Queenslander, now world No.2 behind Rory McIlroy, could not help but feel like he left plenty out on the course.

“I was expecting more this year. I think I have played better golf than the results have shown,” the 2013 Masters champion said.

“I have to put my finger on why that is and that’s what I will have to do between now and when I next play. I need to do better somehow.”

After watching the likes of McIlroy and Martin Kaymer win majors this year with aggressive golf, Scott attempted to play with more freedom over the four event playoffs.

But while it helped him lead the field at East Lake in birdies with 20, he also carded 10 bogeys and three double bogeys.

“I think everything is there in my game but it is about putting it together,” he said.

“I have enjoyed the last four weeks because I have played very free and I made a lot of birdies but I made a lot of bogeys as well so it’s trying to find that balance of freedom and consistency. That’s where I will start in practice.”

Scott will next play in the Japan Open on October 16-19 before readying himself for another assault on the Australian Triple Crown in November and December.

He is still steaming after letting the Australian Open slip to McIlroy with a 72nd hole bogey last year after claiming the Australian Masters and PGA Championship prior.

“I am looking forward to going home. I had such a good time playing last year and I think everyone there will be excited with the schedule and who is coming down,” Scott said.

“I will be raring to go but I won’t think about the Triple Crown unless I am heading to the PGA with a couple of trophies.

“I certainly have my sights set on them all but I have made it known I was gutted after the Australian Open last year and I would love to win that.

That’s the unfinished business, I would love to have another shot at it this year.”
