The Scotty Slam is no longer possible, but world No.2 Adam Scott will still head to Royal Sydney in form and on an emotional high.

Coming off wins in the Australian PGA and Masters, Scott had hoped to make it a clean sweep by taking individual honours in the World Cup at Royal Melbourne on Sunday, then claiming the Open in Sydney.

But after starting seven shots adrift on Sunday, he had to settle for third behind Australian teammate Jason Day and Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, despite shooting the round of the day, a five-under-par 66.

Any personal disappointment, though, was offset by watching friend Day achieve a breakthrough home victory and by helping him clinch the team competition for Australia.

“Its a pretty good result, I reckon,” Scott said.

“I tried to keep my focus a little bit on the teams event, especially after (shooting 75 on) Thursday obviously when I was far behind.

“It has traditionally been a team event and I felt like were playing here at Royal Melbourne and Australia for the World Cup.

“I thought it would be great if Jason and I were to win … we will look back with really fond memories.

Early in the final round, Scott gave himself a serious chance of continuing his winning streak.

He holed his approach for an eagle on the first, then birdied the next two holes to be just three shots behind Day.

While Scott couldn’t maintain that momentum, when he holed a long birdie putt on the 16th he was just one off the lead.

A bogey on the 18th scuttled his chances and he ended up three shots behind Day.

It sets the scene for another battle between the top two Australians at Royal Sydney starting on Thursday.

Scott will be out to complete Australia’s triple crown – the PGA, Masters and Open – and become the only player other than Robert Allenby in 2005 to have done so, while Day will be after back-to-back wins.
