Rory McIlroy’s odds shorten in Australian Open 2013 betting

World Cup winner Jason Day and former world number 1 Rory McIlroy have been well-backed at Sportingbet Australia to upset favourite Adam Scott’s quest for the triple crown.

Day and McIlroy have been the best backed golfers to win this week’s Australian Open with Day firming from $8 into $7.50 following a number of bets including $3,000 at $8 and McIlroy firming from $7.50 into $7 after a bet of $4,000 at $7.50.

“Scott will start favourite but we are seeing that punters are keen to take him on,” Sportingbet’s Michael Felgate said.

Scott is a $3.75 favourite to add the Australian Open to his wins in the Australian PGA and Masters earlier this month.

“Scott was backed off the map in those wins and we were expecting more of the same here but punters are betting around him in the Open,” Felgate said.

The top three golfers dominate betting, with the next best in the market $26.

“It would be a major surprise if the winner came from outside the top three but there has been some small money for Aussies Aaron Baddeley and Geoff Ogilvy to cause an upset at $26, ” Felgate said.

Robert Allenby, the only golfer to complete the Australian triple crown in 2005, is a $41 chance to deny Scott’s quest to join him this week.
