Perth golf event to head-hunt big guns

The Perth International could be moved from October to earlier in the year under grand plans to attract more top-end talent to the $1.75 million tournament.

World No.22 Victor Dubuisson, 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and 2013 PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner headlined this year’s Perth International, which was won by little-know Dane Thorbjorn Olesen.

However, top-ranked players have been few and far between during the three-year existence of the co-sanctioned European Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia event, with timing being the major hurdle.

The current licence of the Perth International has now expired, but IMG golf vice-president David Rollo is optimistic a new three-year deal will be signed off in the coming months.

And Rollo says the tournament may be switched to either January, February or March in order to attract more big names in the future.

If that’s the case, the next tournament will be held in early 2016.

“There’s no event in the world who wouldn’t like to have Rory McIlroy or Adam Scott,” Rollo said.

“It would depend on whether it would work with their schedule.

“We did approach Adam this year, but he just can’t play 52 weeks in a year.

“We want to find the date that’s going to give us the best possible field.

“October works on a couple of levels in terms of being the week before the Race to Dubai finals series.

“But equally, there’s a lot of clutter in this particular date, with five golf events in the region, plus the Asian amateur.

“The television footprint of the European Tour is very significant.

“If we were to hold it in the first quarter of the year where there wasn’t another event in the region, then from a television perspective that would be good for us.”

Rollo has held positive talks with Tourism WA, the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia about securing a new three-year deal for the Perth event.
