Open miss motivates Scott for PGA

Tired of watching his rivals run away with major titles, Adam Scott wants in on the action at next month’s PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy completed an impressive wire-to-wire British Open victory at Hoylake on Sunday, continuing a trend of dominant wins at this year’s majors.

Martin Kaymer (US Open) and Bubba Watson (US Masters) were also emphatic in their victories and world No.1 Scott, frustrated by a third successive top-five British Open finish, will enter the year’s final major hungrier than ever.

“I’m a little annoyed that I’m leaving here playing well and not winning,” Scott after a final-round 66 put him tied fifth, five shots behind McIlroy.

“But it’s down to one major left this year and it’s the last shot at it.

“I’m highly motivated to spend the next two weeks getting in the best possible shape I can to kind of do a Rory or a Martin or Bubba Watson and run away with a major.”

Beyond that, Scott is already looking forward to next year’s British Open to be played at the home of golf, St Andrews.

Finishing in the top three in 2012 and 2013, nobody has been knocking on the door of the historic tournament more than Scott, who is desperate to become the first Australian since Greg Norman in 1993 to win the Claret Jug.

“It’s really exciting,” Scott said.

“I mean, if you can’t win it here, then why not win it at St Andrews?

“That would be an even better story.”

Scott will hang on to the top ranking despite falling short of victory at Royal Liverpool but 25-year-old McIlroy is now breathing down his neck in second.

While Scott rued his bad luck with conditions this week, he paid tribute to the Northern Irishman, who will attempt to complete a career grand slam at next year’s US Masters.

“When he’s in rhythm, he’s phenomenal,” Scott said.

“He doesn’t have weaknesses and he has more strengths than most anyone else.”

Scott plans to take only a few days break before commencing preparations for the WGC Bridgestone Invitation in Akron, Ohio later this month.

The PGA Championship then start at Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville on August 7.
