Ogilvy tuning for Masters return

Former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy is hoping the World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship will help hone his game ahead of a return to the Masters.

Back at Trump Doral’s Blue Monster Course, the scene of one of his three WGC titles, Ogilvy is hoping the presence of a major like world-class field and some fond memories will kick-start his form.

Only a month away from returning to the Masters following a two-year absence and without a top 25 finish so far in 2015 the Victorian knows he needs to find some momentum.

“I’ve been playing okay without getting the results, so it would be nice to get some return on the good work and this is obviously a great event,” Ogilvy said.

“WGC’s are clearly a step above prestige wise when you win one. They carry a bigger exemption and you don’t win any of these without beating top 10 guys in the world down the stretch.”

Just 74 players make up the field in the no-cut elite event including every one of the world’s top 50, the first time since the 2012 US PGA Championship an event has boasted such quality.

The course is renowned for being tough, with length, winds, and water its defence against low scoring.

“It wasn’t really as monstrous when I won here in 2008, it is different now,” Ogilvy admitted.

“But whenever you go back to a place where you’ve won or done well at you just feel better on the first tee.

“I’m looking forward to the week for sure.”

But he admits to also thinking of Augusta, and has been since shoring up a spot in the field in September last year.

“I am ready and pretty excited. I had the whole thing planned out schedule wise last December to maximise my chances of nurturing my confidence and getting my game in the right shape,” Ogilvy added.

“Missing it for two years sucked, especially the first year when Adam Scott won. That was brutal. But the closer I get to returning the more excited I get.”
