Ogilvy happy with recent PGA Tour results

Geoff Ogilvy ended his US PGA Tour season a distant last at the Tour Championship but is excited about his return to golf’s higher echelon.

Ogilvy is hopeful he’s in the beginning stages of a second coming after using the last seven weeks to secure a return to the Masters and the US and British Opens and also collect his eighth US tour victory.

After his win in Reno in early August and a second place finish in the second playoff event in Boston, Ogilvy can now pick and choose to play where and when around the biggest events.

It appeared impossible just two months back with the 2006 US Open champion manufacturing just two top 10 finishes in over two and a half years, forcing him to grind at smaller events.

But now he can afford the luxury of taking time off to refresh before teeing it up in the Perth International at Lake Karrinyup Country Club next month.

Ogilvy has also confirmed he will play the Australian Masters at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne before the Australian Open at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney, both in November.

While he may squeeze in a US event in Asia he could delay his new season start all the way to January and the Tournament of Champions in Maui, where he won in 2009 and 2010 at Kapalua.

“I’m not happy with my result here but I am very happy with the last seven weeks,” Ogilvy said.

“I am very happy with where I am at after almost being ready to give up golf in July until the new season started in October. If you had of told me I’d be here back then I’d have said no chance.

“But I’m pretty excited about being back at the Masters and of course the Open being back at St Andrews next year.”

The biggest lesson the 37-year-old took out of his low period was to appreciate the times you play well.

“I think I will be a better player than I ever was because you learn so much more playing badly then when you play well,” he said.

“It seems easy when you are playing well. I think I am better equipped to play better now in every aspect and I know more about what makes me tick as a golfer.”
