New golf pro Lee to play sparingly at home

Fresh from topping the LPGA qualifying school former world amateur No.1 and fledgling professional Minjee Lee may play just a couple of tournaments in Australia this summer.

The 18-year-old West Australian, who only turned professional back in September, survived a gruelling five-round marathon the weekend before last to earn her card for the US tour.

After a brief off-season break with family in Korea, Lee will embark on her rookie season on the US tour and will look to base herself in the United States.

Scheduling clashes will make it hard for Lee to play many local events this summer, other than the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne in mid-February, which is part of the US Tour.

The Masters at Royal Pines in Queensland starts just a few days after the second LPGA tour event in the Bahamas, which clashes with the Victorian Open.

Her presence in the New Zealand and NSW Opens will likely depend on whether she get invitations to tournaments the same weeks in Thailand and Singapore respectively.

She isn’t worried about high expectations others may have of her following her outstandingly successful amateur career and isn’t setting too many goals.

“Maybe they have high expectations, but I don’t really think about it,” Lee said.

“I just play my golf and stay in my own little bubble.

“I would love to get the Rookie of the Year, but I’m just going to take one tournament at a time I haven’t really thought about my goals next year

“I’m not really going in with too high expectations.”
