He’s already been told to lose the broomstick and now Adam Scott may have to ditch his caddie as well after Steve Williams revealed 2014 will be his last year carrying golf bags fulltime.

Williams and the controversial long putter have been Scott’s two most trusted allies over the past three years, helping transform the Queenslander into a major champion and heir apparent to Tiger Woods’ world No.1 ranking.

But with putters anchored to the body banned from 2016 and Williams deciding to scale back after a celebrated career caddying for Scott, Woods, Greg Norman and Raymond Floyd, the Masters champion may be without his most important accessories before too long.

“Adam knows my intentions. He knows that 2014 will be my last year of doing it fulltime so he knows that if I’m going to carry on in 2015 it will be on a limited basis,” Williams told The Golf Show on Fox Sports on Tuesday night.

“So we’re just trying to focus on having the best year that we can in 2014 and then we’ll discuss it at the end of the year.”

Williams said three-and-a-half decades on tour was enough.

“I think it’s my 36th year of continuous caddying, so 36 is a number that’s sort of synonymous with golf,” he said.

“I’ve just turned 50 and I just thought it was the right time.

“I’ve not had enough of the job, but I’ve certainly had enough of the travelling.

“So at the end of this year I might carry on on a part-time basis or I might quit altogether.”

Williams admitted he wanted to quit altogether last year after Scott became the first Australia to ever don the famous green jacket.

“As I was driving home from the course that night, I wanted to retire there and then,” the Kiwi said.

“That’s all I wanted to do, was just quit.

“But I had quite a few mates back in New Zealand who said I couldn’t do that.”

A year on and Williams remains committed to helping Scott land a second major.

“That’s exactly what we’re focusing on. That’s how the whole year has been planned,” Williams said.

“It’s a great goal to have so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Scott’s next chance will come next month when he defends his Masters title.

“The lead-up to Augusta is very important,” Williams said.

“And Adam’s taken a good break in January and February to ensure when he gets there he’s ready.”
