Green has share of Vic Open lead

Richard Green continues to steal the show at the Vic Open, the experienced left-hander claiming a share of the opening-round lead at Thirteenth Beach.

A day after recording a remarkable hole-in-one albatross in the pro-am, Green shot a six-under 66.

It was good enough to claim a tie for the lead with countrymen Kristopher Mueck and Daniel Nisbet, with the latter getting to six-under playing in the more testing afternoon conditions on the links course.

Green’s Norwegian fiancee Marianne Skarpnord is also near the top of the leaderboard in the women’s event, which is being held concurrently on the 36-hole layout at Barwon Heads on the Bellarine peninsula.

“I feel like my form is pretty good and once I got on the right side of par I felt more and more comfortable,” said Green, who is a regular on the European Tour.

“The last three weeks of playing on the European Tour, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar, the competition level over there is just immense.

“Your game adapts to a certain level and I feel like I’ve got myself into pretty good form.”

Green looked set to hold the outright lead when he got to eight-under late in the round, only to double-bogey the 17th.

Nisbet was happy to claim a share of the lead after playing in the afternoon when the wind picked up.

“It’s a tough course out there in this wind so to shoot six-under, I’m very excited for the rest of the week,” Nisbet said.

“What helped me so much was not making bogeys.

“Hopefully I’ll have a good round in the morning and get out before the wind kicks up too much and maybe shoot another good score.”

New Zealander Jared Pender was in outright fourth place on 67, one shot clear of Australian trio Lincoln Tighe, Adam Bland and Todd Sinnott and Kiwi Gareth Paddison.

Sinnott was impressive in his first round as a professional.
