Spain’s Sergio Garcia has pushed his way into a two-shot lead and Jason Day has withdrawn with a back injury midway through the second round of the US PGA tour’s penultimate playoff event at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.

Garcia is five under par on his round through 16 holes at the BMW Championship to move to six under for the tournament, two clear of Canada’s Graham DeLaet and the United States’ Ryan Palmer, who share second place at five under.

John Senden is the best Australian, making a move at two-under par in a tie for 11th, while Day was forced to pull the pin after just nine holes of his second round with a back strain.
