Day shoots course record in Maui

World No.8 Jason Day has set the mark in the clubhouse after tying the Plantation Course record in the final round of the US PGA Tour Tournament of Champions.

Day shot a blistering 11-under-par 62 on the final day to rocket up to 20 under for the tournament, leaving him tied third as the leaders play the final few holes.

It tied the course record held by KJ Choi, Graeme McDowell and Chris Kirk, with Kirk also shooting 62 earlier in the day.

Americans Jimmy Walker and Patrick Reed are 21 under par with just a few holes to play and Hideki Matsuyama joined Day at 20 under with three to play.

Day’s 11-under total is his best score ever on tour and this represents the two-time winners first course record.

The 27-year-old opened with four pars before catching fire.

He slotted a short birdie putt home on the fifth, dropped a 20 footer into the cup on the sixth, doubled it with a 40 foot effort on the seventh before coaxing in a 12 foot birdie on eight to announce himself a potential contender.

A missed opportunity to birdie the par five ninth followed but not to be deterred he wedged to three-feet on the 10th and then put away a seven-foot chance on the 11th.

A par on 12 was followed up by two more approaches inside seven feet on 13 and 14 and then a 14 footer found the cup on the 15th.

Another birdie on the 16th kept the momentum before a par on 17 left him needing eagle on the last for the record alone.

After splitting the fairway Day went for the par five green in two with a one iron, but lost it right into the grandstands, only to get a bounce back to be just short of the green.

A chip to four feet and the resulting putt gave him an outside chance at a victory.

Matt Jones was the next best Australian at 13 under in a tie for 13th while Steven Bowditch (-10), John Senden (-9) and Geoff Ogilvy (-8) were towards the back end of the 34-man winners only field.
