Day didn’t swear, it was me: Beljan

Jason Day’s playing partner from last week’s US PGA Tour event at Pebble Beach has owned up to being the one that used foul language picked up by broadcasters.

During the final round on Sunday, Day hit his tee shot on the 12th hole when TV microphones clearly picked up a burst of expletives that were attributed to the Australian after his shot went slightly long of the green.

Players caught swearing on camera are usually subject to undisclosed fines by the tour but the world No.4 was quick to point out he didn’t in fact use the inappropriate language.

On Tuesday, American Charlie Beljan, who was paired with Day at Pebble Beach, issued a statement regarding the confusion.

“At the 12th hole in the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, I used inappropriate language after tripping over television cables on the tee box,” Beljan said.

“I sincerely apologise for my words and to those who may have been offended.

“At the time my fellow competitor Jason Day was hitting his tee shot, and some may have assumed, wrongly, the words were said by Jason. They were not. I said them, and take full responsibility.

“I have great respect for Jason Day as a player – and as a man – and I want to make it perfectly clear Jason had nothing to do with the situation.”

Day had earlier stated he’s wary of setting a good example on the course.

“It was unfortunate people thought it was me and I was sorry to hear about it after play,” Day said.

“I know children watch the golf and I have a young son of my own so I try to be very mindful of my conduct on the golf course. “
