Day beaten, Senden and Leishman win at WGC

Defending champion Jason Day has been humbled by American Charley Hoffman while Marc Leishman and John Senden have produced upset wins on day one of the World Golf Championships Match Play at TPC Harding Park.

Day, the seventh seed, was soundly beaten 4&3 by 49th seed Hoffman as he was unable to lift his energy levels from a long weekend.

After weather delays in last week’s PGA tour event forced Day to play 33 holes on Sunday he looked lethargic against the American and was duly dispatched.

Just a few weeks after almost losing his wife Audrey to illness, Leishman played with a calm freedom and took care of world No.6 Justin Rose 3&2 in the first big upset of the tournament.

Senden then produced an even bigger result, taking out world No.3 Henrik Stenson in 19 holes.
