Day battling putter at PGA Championships

Jason Day’s putter has failed to come out to play as the Australian sits two shots off the pace early in the final round of the US PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

In wet conditions after an earlier rain delay, Day had three birdie chances from inside 11 feet in his first four holes but failed to convert any of them, leaving him two off the lead at 10 under

Americans Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger share top spot at 12 under.

Day has struggled with his putter all week and could have easily been comfortably in the drivers seat had he been able to bury countless short chances.

“I had a few opportunities out there (on the greens) but just didn’t feel quite comfortable. They just didn’t feel like they were going to go in,” Day said after the third round.

Day still has plenty of holes left to push for his maiden major title having posted seven top-10 finishes in his career.

Adam Scott’s dreams of making a big push died on the opening hole when he missed the fairway right and the green long, failing to get up and down and making bogey.

A run of five pars since leaves the world No.2 at six under and tied for 27th, six off the pace.

Matt Jones and Geoff Ogilvy finished up their tournament with a round of 71 to be one-under for the week, while Marc Leishman (69) posted his first under-par round of the week to join his countrymen in a tie for 46th.
