Day, Appleby pushing for win

Jason Day holds a one shot lead and Stuart Appleby is just a shot behind midway through the final round of the US PGA tour’s opening playoff event at Ridgewood Country Club.

Day, the overnight co-leader, has pushed to the outright lead following a two-under par front nine.

He is now 11 under for the championship, one clear of Appleby (12 holes) and Americans Hunter Mahan (nine holes), Jim Furyk (nine holes) and Cameron Tringale (11 holes).

Searching for his second win of the year and third on the US Tour, Day carded four birdies but two bogeys on his opening nine.

Appleby, who is fighting for his survival in the playoffs, has gone on a tear with three birdies in a row to start the back nine.

Appleby, a nine-time US Tour winner, hasn’t saluted since shooting 59 in the final round to win the 2010 Greenbrier Classic.

Adam Scott, the defending Barclay’s champion who came from six shots back to win last year, started his round five back and was quickly within two before cooling off.

His three-under 68 left him at seven-under and currently tied 12th in his defence.

Steven Bowditch who briefly held the lead on the opening day, shot 69 to finish at five under, good enough to secure his place in the next two weeks of playoffs.

John Senden finished his tournament in fine fashion with a five-under 66 to be five-under for the week, ensuring minimal damage, if any, will be done to his season long FedEx Cup standing.

Looking to maintain a position inside the top 30 over the next three weeks to qualify for the Tour Championship Senden is currently projected to be 28th.
