Aussie Smith ties second on LPGA Tour

Australia’s Sarah-Jane Smith has rattled home with a day’s best five-under-par 66 to share second place in the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championship.

There was no catching American Lizette Salas, who claimed her maiden win on the tour by four strokes, shooting a 71 to finish at 13-under-par 271 at the Kingsmill course.

But 29-year-old Smith achieved her career-best result on the tour since her 2006 debut thanks to an unblemished, five-birdie closing round.

She was tied second with former world No.1 Yani Tseng (69) and American Lexi Thompson (69).

South Korean Ryu So-Yeon (69) and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko (71) shared fifth place at eight-under 276.

New Zealand teen Ko and American Stacy Lewis each missed a chance to move into the world number one ranking.
