Australian golfer Matt Jones is just two shots off the lead and tied seventh late in the opening round of the US PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.

Englishman Lee Westwood and Americans Kevin Chappell and Ryan Palmer have set the pace with six-under 65s while Jones is four under through 16 holes.

World number one Rory McIlroy is just a shot off the lead after a 66, while Geoff Ogilvy is the next best Australian at three-under-par through 14 holes, three back in a tie for 12th.

Jason Day is two-under and Adam Scott is six off the pace after an even par round of 71.
