Amateur Todd Sinnott takes Masters lead

Melbourne amateur Todd Sinnott has backed up his impressive opening round to take a share of the clubhouse lead early on day two of the Australian Masters.

The 22-year-old was among a group of four holding the overnight lead at five-under but picked up one shot on the Metropolitan golf course.

Among that four, Michael Wright picked up an birdie on his second hole to join Sinnott in the lead.

Defending champion Adam Scott won’t tee off until just after midday but after his opening round of one over, the pair have set a lofty challenge for the world No.2.

Playing on his home course, the No.1-ranked Australian amateur used his local knowledge in the improved conditions.

With the wind dying down after the tough opening day the lanky 194-centimetre youngster collected four birdies.

After starting on the back nine two late bogeys, on seven and eight, brought him back to the field.

No amateur has ever won the Masters tournament.

It’s Sinnott’s second crack after missing the cut two years ago.

The other big mover among the early starters was Mathew Goggin.

After an opening round one-under 71, he moved to four-under with his 69.

Of the other overnight leaders Stephen Allan is yet to tee off while Steven Bowditch has dropped back to two-under.
