Adam Scott finds fun in poor shots

World No.1 Adam Scott welcomed the opportunity to scramble at Firestone Country Club on Friday but hopes his precision swing returns for a weekend charge.

Scott scratched out a two-under par second round of 68 to move to three-under for the week, not out of contention in a tie for 12th, but needing something special from eight shots back of leader Sergio Garcia’a hot pace in the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.

Hitting just half of his fairways on Friday, and just 19 of 36 greens through two rounds, Scott was forced to use part of his game he hasn’t had to rely on recently.

“I have enjoyed having to scramble. I have been swinging the club really nicely and I haven’t been out of position for a few weeks so it has been quite fun to scramble a little bit, make some par saving putts and get some momentum going that way,” Scott said.

“I’ve hit a lot of greens lately and haven’t had to chip much so to hit a few scratchy shots and have to scramble has been a bit of fun rather than just fairways and greens every day.

“But hopefully that is the scratchy stuff out of the way and I can play a really nice weekend.”

The Queenslander will likely need to get moving in the third round if he is to recreate his winning heroics of 2011.

He also needs to secure a top five finish to ensure world No.2 Rory McIlroy cannot steal his top perch should the Northern Irishman win.

McIlroy is currently tied third at seven-under and well and truly gunning for a fifth trip to No.1.

“If I can hit a lot of fairways tomorrow I have to put a low number up on the board, I can’t have a slow round,” Scott said.

“To play a really good weekend would be strong going into next week (PGA Championship) but more importantly than that I want to be in the mix here with nine to go on Sunday.

“I have 27 holes to get myself there.”
