Inspired by Cameron Boyce, Adam Zampa believes he is only a few good performances away from becoming Australian cricket’s next leg-spin bolter.

But Zampa, 22, nearly pulled off something almost as impressive on Wednesday – spinning South Australia to a one-day victory at fast bowlers’ paradise the Gabba.

Zampa (4-18 off 10 overs) was named man-of-the-match but could not stop Western Australia dramatically snatching a three-wicket, bonus point victory against the win-less Redbacks.

Zampa was on a hat-trick as the Warriors at one stage lost 4-4 after cruising at 0-69 chasing a paltry 148 for victory.

They lost 6-23 overall before forgotten former Test allrounder Ashton Agar (29 not out) and Adam Voges (25) steadied the WA ship with a 41-run seventh wicket stand.

Agar finally steered WA to 7-150 in the 37th over.

“It’s hard to accept an award like that when you lose a game,” Zampa said of his man-of-the-match honour.

Zampa still had his eye on one prize after fellow leggie Boyce of Queensland recently starred on debut in Australia’s six-wicket Twenty20 international win over Pakistan in Dubai, taking 2-10.

Asked if Boyce had been an inspiration, Zampa said: “Definitely.

“Any of the spinners in Australia, we are all close (to international selection).

“It just takes a couple of wickets and good performances and you will get your opportunity.”

South Australia (0-3 record) will need to win their remaining four games – starting with Sunday’s Allan Border Field clash with Queensland – to stay alive in the one-day finals race.

The Redbacks slumped to 6-45 as left-arm quicks Jason Behrendorff (3-38) and Joel Paris (3-34) tore through the top order, including Australian coach Darren Lehmann’s son Jake for 13.

Big hitting from debutant allrounder Trent Lawford (61 off 44 balls) could not stop SA being bowled out for 147 by the 28th over.

Craig Simmons (26) and Marcus Harris (34) put on an opening 69-run stand for WA before their run chase derailed.

Former SA batsman Michael Klinger went for a six-ball duck on WA debut amid the carnage.

Agar was dropped then almost run out by Lawford on three before hitting the winning runs for WA.

South Australia lost captain Johan Botha and ‘keeper Tim Ludeman (hamstring) before the game.
