Women’s Ashes test match worth less points

A victory in the sole women’s Ashes Test match will be worth less following a review of the scoring system before the 2015 series in England.

The Southern Stars will contest their Ashes over a seven-game series, beginning with three one-day internationals, followed by a single Test match and closed out with three Twenty20s.

In the 2015 series, a Test match will be worth four points for the victor, down from six in the previous incarnation.

Points for a draw will be split evenly.

Australian players questioned the six-point weighting for the Test match follow their Ashes defeat earlier this year, saying it was too much for a format which is hardly played in women’s cricket.

Cricket Australia said lowering the points, as well as moving it mid-series would improve the balance of the competition and maintain interest across all three formats.

One-day internationals and Twenty20s will be worth two points a contest.

The one-day internationals will also be Australia and England’s third round of fixtures in the new ICC Women’s Championship.

The Southern Stars will be aiming to snap a two Ashes series losing streak when they open their campaign with a one-day international at The County Ground in Taunton on July 21.

Australia’s women have not won an Ashes series in England since 2001.
