Wily Hogg on track for Scorchers’ return

Perth Scorchers coach Justin Langer is confident veteran spinner Brad Hogg will return for another season of the Twenty20 Big Bash League.

And English opener Michael Carberry will also be lured back to the defending champions if the Scorchers players get their way.

Cult hero Hogg overcame a hamstring injury to spearhead last season’s title-winning campaign.

But the 44-year-old, who will suit up for Kolkata in the upcoming IPL, was a notable omission when the Scorchers unveiled 14 player re-signings on Friday.

Hogg is keen to play on, and Langer is just as eager to welcome back his good friend.

But any decision will be delayed for a bit longer to take into account the chance of injury.

“The only reason why Hoggy’s not signed yet is he’s 44 years old,” Langer said.

“We’ve known each other since we were 15, so we’re not hiding him.

“We’re hopeful (he’ll play again). He was the X-factor for us last year.”

Carberry made a scratchy beginning to his Scorchers career last summer.

But by the end of the tournament, he had scored 266 runs at an average of 44.33 to set a solid platform at the top of the order.

The Scorchers are yet to fill their two import spots, and Langer said both Carberry and paceman Yasir Arafat were chances to return.

“If you talk to our guys, all they want is Michael Carberry to come back, because they love him,” Langer said.

“I got a message from Carberry yesterday saying, ‘I’m missing my brothers’.

“That’s the impact we have here – they love playing with each other.

“But at this time of the year, there’s a number of very interesting prospects who have been put on the table in front of us who’d like to play Big Bash cricket.”

The Scorchers have won the past two BBL titles, and Langer said re-signing the bulk of last summer’s squad would give the team vital stability as they attempt the three-peat.

Next Wednesday, the Scorchers will award the inaugural Simon Katich Medal to the team’s Player of the Season.

Katich led the Scorchers to their first title last year, but Langer doesn’t believe there’s any way he can lure the 39-year-old out of retirement.

The former Test star is now working at AFL club GWS as their football operations manager, and Langer said there would only be one way to get him back to the Scorchers.

“When I get sacked, he might come back as coach,” Langer joked.

“You couldn’t have a better bloke.

“Leadership is critical. Simon Katich is steel on and off the field. He’s the epitome of what we’re doing in WA cricket.” PERTH SCORCHERS RE-SIGNINGS
